Augury Devlog #1

Hey so this is my first devlog for my September 1GAM (1 game a month) project!

I wanted to get more organised and consistent with my 1GAM’s, hence the upload of this project and this attendant devlog. I feel like this is a better approach than uploading the finished thing all in one big go at the end.

SO.

For this go round I think it’s gonna be an action rpg, like a cut-rate DIablo. This allows me to work in 3d and practise making some mechanics while moving away from doing another 1st person game.

What I’ll be very happy if I get done during this project is a paperdoll gear system where you can drag and drop new pieces of gear onto your character and have that visually reflected on their model. It’s something I absolutely LOVE in other games like Destiny, WoW, Monster Hunter, etc. It’s not something that necessarily helps the core gameplay loop but goddamn it i just want to implement one for once!

The paperdoll thing may, though, be slightly hindered by my complete lack of 3d modelling skills, but we’ll see how it goes!

Here’s a link to the design doc that I’ve been working on (another first). It hasn’t got much in it as of yet, but I’ll be filling it out more fully soon, as I’d like to actually design my games a little bit more, instead of their development being very messy and organic.

The above reinforces something I learned in Shatter, last months project, which is that having a complete game loop is (surprise!) really important. It was so nice to have something that people could play from beginning to end, as opposed to a loose jumble of mechanics.

That’s something I plan to do as soon as possible for Augury, I want to be able to have an end state that is reachable within the first week or two of development.

Oh! I’m also going to use Asset Forge (https://assetforge.io/) for this. The lack of decent 3d models for my games is something I feel has been holding me back for ages, so it’ll be nice to have some alright ones for once!

See you next time!
